hi. i'm having trouble getting autoplay to work. checked all the right boxes
in 'set defaults' and still nothing. can i delete the driver and download it
again?

You can uninstall the DVD drive in Device Manager and reboot. Windows will
detect and install the drive automatically. There is no driver to download.

perhaps it's not the right thing to do....i just thought it would resolve my
issue.any other thought?

No -- NOT reinstalling Vista from scratch.

Reboot = RESTART

It might indeed solve your problem.

Do you know how to use Device Manager?

AAh, Good! yes i think i do:) click on the + sign at cd/dvd rom and
uninstall. will try that. there are two drivers listed, one digitally signed
by microsoft and another not, publisher, Sonic Solutions file version
3.00.42a (C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\PxHelp20.sys) if that means anything to
you..
Ok, about to do it. Thanks Cal Bear..will let you know what happens. sean

OK, haven't blown anything up..that's good. it did reinstall and that Sonic
Solutions drive must have been part of the original...but still no autoplay
and stiil unable to read certain dvd's...chug chugging noise...like it's
battling to read disc. think i should take it back to HP for a check
up...it's only six weeks old.?

Do you mean you had two drives appearing in Device Manager for the one physical
drive and each listing a separate driver?

no, when i expand the cd/dvd rom item,it shows me Slimtype DVD A DS8A1P ATA
Device...click on that i get a properties window. clicking Driver tab shows
Microsoft version 6.0.6000.16386. click Driver Details in that tab, i get
driver files...the signed microsoft one and the other. i cab play disc but
have to go to media player and click play. if i open optical drive, no auto
play options, only "open" which then opens the files on the disc. i've set
auto play to run yet it doesn't. Before this started, today, i couldn't play
certain DVD's..got the chug chug sound yet some dvd's worked great.

I just checked my DC/DVD entry in Device Manager. It also shows two driver
files -- one from Microsoft and one from Sonic Solutions.

I don't know why you can't get Auto Play to work properly, but if the drive is
making a "chug chug" sound and won't play some DVDs, I would definitely take it
back and exchange it.

You don't have a DVD movie option in Control Panel > AutoPlay?

Hi Cal Bear. sorry for that late response. i guess you're right..take it
back. i do have DVD option under control panel. spoke HP here today...say
it's software issue and advised me to download AutoPlay repair tool...but it
stops working! the tool i mean. so now i have to go to computerand click on
drive in order to see whats in drive...then i can only open, not run them (
software discs). Video, have to open media player and click play from within
media player. very frustrated. thanks for your advice.
regards
sean

Hi, could I do the uninstall for my cd-rom and restart, would that solve the
problem of error# 39?

The first link here is also for error 39.

You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive, or you receive an error message after

you remove a CD recording program or a DVD recording program in Windows XP: "error code 31"

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314060

The CD drive or the DVD drive does not work as expected after you upgrade a computer to Windows Vista

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/929461

When you insert a CD or a DVD, Windows Vista may not recognize the disc

Hi, since I wrote my question, I did the uninstall of my cd-rom and
restarted the computer and got the following message:"the installation of
your device could not be completed. The installation of ATAPI DVD DH16W1P ATA
device failed. If you know thmanufaturer, contact them with help of
installing this device." then I went back to 'device manager' and there are
both my drives listed, the internal one above and my external one as well. So
I went back to the little window where you can try and upgrade or reslove
this problem and that's when the error 39 message showed up again. I have
been to the first 2 web links you sent, will try the 3rd one now. I have
found another site that might help, I am trying it now, and that is to enter
the 'value' for each driver, 1 for CD-R,2 for CD-RW, or 3 for standard CD-Rom
that is not writable, do you know about this

I forgot to mention that I can open and close the trays of either drive, can
insert a disk, but nothing happens, it's like they are on a seperate power
system, not connected to the computer,Windows vista.

Make sure all the cables are connected properly and that the
master/slave settings are correct. Try a different IDE/SATA connector.
