dvd playback with fresh win xp pro install

my system is a dell inspiron 8100, 1ghz, 512 mb ram with windvd v4 and a sony
cd-rw crx810e dvd player

thought i would mention this first..when i had windows 2000 pro installed on
this system then upgraded to win xp pro sp2, dvd playback via windvd or
media player 10 worked perfectly.

the other day i decided to do a fresh install of winxp (for reasons i won't
go into here, a long story and all that ) and didn't bother installing win
2k pro first, why should i bother making the install longer than it is
already, anyway after what seemed like 12 hours of messing about with windows
update and other stuff i finaly had a fresh install of windows xp pro, great
ill watch a dvd i thought, little did i know that the playback would be like
watching and listening to the six million dollar man (anyone old enough to
remember that series?) doing his slow motion stunts.

bottom line is, on this machine dvd's play back perfectly under windows 2000
however when played back using win xp i wan't to pick up my computer and
throw it out the window

Is there a fix for this problem or should i just install win 2k then upgrade
to xp?
ive tried setting the dvd to dma transfer mode but still have problems with
playback under winxp

An XP installation, of itself, does not include DVD codecs (third party
things that would have had to be licensed). When you upgraded your
2000, the codec that came with whatever DVD player you had installed
came along (And got used by WMP as well); now you will need to
re-install that package

thanks for the reply alex

i installed windvd 4 along with xp pro. when you try and play a dvd title
with no codec you get an error message and a blank screen..this is not a
blank screen its like watching a movie while someone is pressing the pause
button every 2 seconds..at first i though this was a dvd player hardware
fault or maybe a problem with overheating but after testing (a format and
fresh install of windows xp proffesional service pack 2 ALL updates and
windvd4 then a format and fresh install of windows 2000 ALL updates and
windvd 4) i have found that this machine works fine under windows 2000, BUT
under windows xp sp2 it runs like a dog..which i find funny as it has a
designed for windows xp logo stuck on it.

Commercial DVD titles are encripted, a modern equivlent to a message
sent in a secret code. The software to decrypt the disk is part of the
DVD player installation software. WinDVD, a seperate piece of software,
then adds the user interface (media and control windows, code to respond
to keyboard & mouse events). If the DVD player came with the computer
the decrypting software might be a function of the OEM's
installation/recovery disks. Some OEMs may have Windows XP, the DVD
drive software (the movie/video decrytion code) and the player software
(like WinDVD) on three or more seperate CDs.

I'm not well up in versions of windvd, but it may be that you need an
upgrade of it for XP.
