DVD Not Playing Audio

PROBLEM: My DVD ROM which has worked well for years just started
experiencing audio problems. I can play an audio CD fine, but when I
try to play a DVD, I have no sound. I've messed with every volume
control I can find and still no audio.

I put a different DVD ROM in my computer to see if the drive had just
given up the ghost, but the other drive had the exact same problem.
It seems like an OS related problem? Suggestions anyone?

Thanks,
Tom

Because you cross posted, mentioning the OS in the message is helpful.
Check that digital audio is enabled for the drive. Sounds like it
isn't. Also, are you using Windows media player to play the DVD or
some third party software like Power DVD or WinDVD? Did this happen
after doing a windows update? (Even if you want automatic updates, you
should have windows notify you so you know when it happens, and can
tell if the updates caused something to break

Sorry. I am using Windows XP and did verify that the checkbox on the
DVD's hardware configuration was enabled for digital audio. I have
tried several DVD players and had the same results with each. I think
you hit the nail on the head with the Windows Update. Until this
happened, I had XP automatically installing updates (without
notification). The DVD audio just stopped working one day and could
have been a result of an automatic update. What would XP have updated
to cause this problem? DirectX issue?

I don't understand how my audio cds still play? Another thing that is
weird (forgive my h/w ignorance), but I can disconnect the audio cable
from the DVD and audio cds still play? Does that cable do anything
anymore?

Thanks,
Tom

What player are you using? Windows media player and DirectX have both
had recent updates which could be part of the problem? When it plays,
what is the application it plays in? Your DVD probably came with
something like PowerDVD. Try playing the dvd with that, or try Windows
Media Player if you aren't using it now. Also check to see which audio
channel you are set to play back.

The audio cable from the drive is not needed if you are using digital
audio for play back. That cable is for the analog signal.

I've tried both Windows Media Player and the ATI DVD Player that came
with the video card. I've also tried changing the audio channel
within the DVD player. Do you think DirectX has something to do with
the problem?
