Is there any way to add a DVD Title menu to a Windows Movie maker file? I
have recently acquired a DVD-RW Drive, and now I want to transfer all of the
tapes from my DV camera onto dvd, but I want to be able to skip around to
different segments of Digital Video, with out fast forwarding. Can anyone
help?

Hello,

Yes, you need to use DVD creation software...check the Help file

You import the result of your editing from whatever program you used to
create your video into the DVD softwrae and procedd from there.

The program I and others find truly excelent is Nero from www.nero.com

There are free bits of software (best suited to the Nerds of this world)
that will enable you to create a DVD, providing you are happy to go through
the learning curve for each piece of software needed.....NEro is highly
capable and is able to produce more than one disk at a time if you have the
necessary hardware. You can choose to use it as it comes or you can delve
deeper to find control options for the more advanced user...

NERDS do it in little pieces

I haven't taken the route to buy a newer version of Nero (or upgrade MyDVD)
to get all the bells and whistles of DVD authoring. Most of my videos are of
my infant and toddler daughters. I capture small amounts at a time. This
allows me many options.

1) Smaller less complicated movies in MM.
2) Smaller movies are brought into MyDVD (older version) and become chapters
themselves.
3) The movies sizes are less than 5 GB so I am able to use data DVDs to back
up the DV-AVI files. Yes it overkill (back up drive, back up data DVD,
authored DVD, and the original tape). However you can never recover what you
lose. Cant go back in time.
4) With all the issues some users have had with upgrades and new codecs etc,
I'm not changing what works.

May have drifted a bit off the point, but you can get around the chapter
point creation if your authoring software is limited by making smaller movies
and importing them separately. I use MyDVD v4.5. Good luck!

On the data backup etc I too keep i,portant stuff on the original tape as
well as creating a DVD for general use and one as an archive. None of it is
really old enough yet to worry about disc failure. I guess I will start
checkng for problems next year...a friend in the trade reports that some
DVD's can fail as early as 24months from date of manufacture. I hope he was
talking about the cheap stuff.

On using small video clips as individual files on a DVD so as to emulate
chapters...can you set an option to go to the next video at the end of one
of your clips/chapters or are you forced back to the main menu? Dazzle DVD
Complete lets you set a range of options at the end of a clip including
jumping to different menus etc. Nero has some of those...jump to next clip
is one of them

Common practice for me is to date the DVD.
I plan to transfer to a new DVD when the date reaches the 5 year mark (I
don't use cheap DVD's)

Most of the better DVD authoring tools give you the choice of setting it up
to go to the next clip or to go back to the menu. But I will also say that
creating chapter points is easy to do and doing so with separate clips does
not create a seemless video there is an obvious pause between clips when
using separate clips at least with all the programs I have used.

John,

Yes my movies play continuously on the DVD. It doesn't throw you back to the
main menu. That's why in MM all I do is fade in/out to black so that the
final DVD looks smooth. Funny thing is, I remember checking the box to 'play
all', the first time I made a DVD, but I haven't been able to find the box
since. I'm not sure if it was in a preference table or what, as I don't see
it each time I burn. I'll have to look harder for my own piece of mind.

Steve

I don't actually use MyDVD anymore since I don't like it, and actually the
fact that you do makes me understand why you use separate clips since MyDVD
doesn't do chapter points very well, but with all the other DVD authoring
programs I use and have used the option for continuous play vs. going back
to the menu is either in the options you set when getting ready to burn
(Ulead Movie Factory, Nero Vision Express) or in the options when creating a
chapter point (Ulead DVD Workshop, TMPGenc DVD Author)

Yes I hate it when that happens...with me its more often because I am
remembering what I once did in some other program. I have got myself into a
mess once or twice over things like that.

Now why did I not think of doing that. I will have to invest in some more
advanced technologu than Ihave at this moment.

A felt tip pen :) :)

wojo,

To each his own I guess. Not that I'm telling everyone that MyDVD v4.5 is
the next best thing since sliced bread. Sometimes you find something that
meets your needs and you don't need more. Believe me if I had a nickel for
every offer from Sonic to upgrade to the newest and best, I'd have the money
to buy it!! But I learned my lesson from my previous PC that you can run into
serious issues by loading more and more (bigger and better). So once I found
something that worked, I'm sticking with it. My last name isn't Spielberg so
its not that important to have all the bells and whistles. Besides MyDVD was
free and the less I spend, the happier the wife is. :o)

Steve

I definitely understand spending less to make the wife happy BELIEVE ME lol
Actually I wasn't telling you that you shouldn't use MyDVD if it suites your
purpose go for it I was giving my thoughts as to where you can look for the
option of continuous playback/return to menu.
There's nothing wrong with MyDVD if basic is all you need but if you decide
you want better looking DVD's in the future I would then recommend looking
to Ulead's line of DVD authoring tools and you can do so without spending a
dime since they have free trial downloads.

I suppose down the road when I look to replace the external burner with a
cheaper dual layer burner (don't tell the wife LOL!), I may look at something
else, or whatever comes with it. Do you know of any burners that Ulead might
be packaged with?

Not that I know of. Usually the software packaged with DVD burners is either
trial software or just not very good.

Hey you guys quit talking about age. I just had a senior moment on a post I
did up above. Not only wasn't my answer very good, I thought it said
'player' when it said 'burner'. Wow, and the other day I lost my wallet in
my shoe too!! YIKES

2nd thing to go is the memory and I'll be darned if I can remember what the
1st thing is ;-)
