Shouldn't Windows DVD Maker allow me to create a DVD with an AVI file as
source? Or do I need a codec or something? Since Mediacenter is part of
Vista - I would have though it would have a basic encoder.

If you try the FFD Codec pack, I know iut works with MCE for Vista. that is
what I am using, and everything seems to work fine, I can watch MPG, MPG2,
AVI, XviD, and DivX. Movie Maker I am not sure about, however, if you really
need to burn a movie, if you get the Videora Xbox 360 converter, it will
convert your movies (I use the 16:9 setting) into the MPG format that can be
used in Movie Maker.

Hope this helps

I d/l the codec but Media Player still doesn't know how to play an AVI
file...I haven't rebooted yet - but I wouldn't think that needs to happen.

Something I did find, is Xilisoft AVI to DVD program works to burn DVD's on
Vista - not as nice as all the features Nero offered but closer.
