I own a dell 8100 with a cd/rw drive. I also have a program which records dvd's. In order to do this I must know which disc I may use. R+ or R-.

Likely Dash R.
Look at the front of the drive. If you have two labels:
DVD with a ellipse with a dash in it and R/RW the drive uses DVD-R or
DVD-RW.
A second label saying Compact Disc Recordable means the drive records
CD-R and CD-RW.

Most computers use the Dash R discs. If you have a third label, then you
have a newer combination drive that can accept either Dash R or Plus R.
