I seem to be having some difficulty getting the DVD image I downloaded from
MSDN to boot on a system without an o/s already on it...they'll work on a
system with XP already on it but won't otherwise...am I missing something
obvious here???

The MSDN image is a full retail version so it should work. Have made sure
that the BIOS of the pc in question is set to boot first from DVD?

The .ISO image is not bootable. Please see the following:

Read the instructions on the MSDN subscriber home page web site
titled: "What is an ISO CD image?"

hmmm...my writer is lying then...it seems to think it's bootable when i write
it...

What software are you using to burn the DVD? the link the other person gave
gives the basics. In Roxio, using Creator Classic, you 'create a disk from
an image', you don't really choose 'make a bootable CD', creating it from the
downloaded image makes it bootable because of the content of the image.

I used "burn image to disc" with Roxio and did not have to do anything else.
The resulting dvd booted all my computers just fine.
