6 mo old Dell Inspiron 530. Windows XP os. Will not write to data DVD. I
wanted to replace the DVD with a new one out of the box but the 530 has new
smaller power connectors and data connectors than the two new replacement
drives i keep as a spare. There must be adapters out there somewhere, any
help I can't beleive the manufacturers would leave customers without and
option.

Natively XP dodnot support writing to DVD, you need to get a third party
application to write to DVD, ie Nero or something similar. on the power and
data connectors, it appears you have connectors for a sata drive, and you
don't have a Sata Drive replacement. you have Pata

You need to purchase a SATA drive to replace the one you have, no need for any
adapter. You can get one from any retail store near you or online.
For some drives and info here are ones at Newegg.com:

Writing to DVDs, you need:

1) DVD writing software -- XP does not do this natively
2) DVD(+-)R media that is blank
3) DVD(+-)RW can be erased and re-written to.

The DVD drive in your PC is based on the newer technology known as
SATA and the other two DVD drives are using the IDE / ATAPI
connection, now also known as PATA. Do not consider buying adapters
as these usually fail most of the time. Get yourself a SATA DVD
recorder, if the Dell unit is not under warranty.

Thanks to all for the info, I'll probably do that. I do already have DVD
writing software both Nero & Sonic.
