OK here is the skinny:

VIA P4PB Ultra MB
P4 3.06
768mb RAM (3x256)
NVIDIA geforce 5200 ultra 128mb
WD 160gb HD on ata controller card
Sony DRU510 DVD
Plextor CDRW
WinXP Pro SP1

DVD and CDRW are on second ide...CDRW as master...DVD slave

Whenever I play a DVD it starts up fine. Can choose from full, or wide screen,
chapters, etc. Then whenever I begin to play it, about 15 sec into it, it
freezes my system and I have to reboot.
This happens on both PowerDVD, and WMP. Is the problem
with my setup either in bios or hardware? Do I need more ram??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
TIA,

ORV

I have my DVD as slave on primary channel and CDRW as master on secondary
channel, that way, Adaptec is happy to do "on the fly" copying. When they
shared the same channel, Adaptec warned me not to have it set up that way.
Worth a try..

Where is Device Manager?????
J/K....it's set to auto select under DMA setting. I did the delete thing and
still the same result....freeze.

Also all MB, CDRW, etc...drivers are up to date.

I checked the Bios and it has under PIO either 'Auto' or numbers listed 1-4
(saying the higher the better) and it also has (right underneath PIO) DMA
either 'Auto' or 'disabled'.
I set the PIO to 1 and DMA to Auto....same thing freeze..........I tried
both on 'Auto'....same thing.....freeze. I tried setting PIO to 4 with DMA
on 'Auto'......freeze.

Thanks for the help....will keep checking.

No, no, no. PIO is ANCIENT, you want UDMA. Set your BIOS to auto detect
your IDE drives, using LBA addressing. Ensure that you jumper your drives
correctly.
This means that you jumper your hard disk as a primary with slave, your DVD
as primary slave, and your burner as secondary master.
Device Manager is only good for ensuring that Windows will use DMA, as it
is usually not enabled by default (Win 9X)versions.

so it is set to "DMA if available", but is it actually running in DMA mode
(i.e. Current Transfer Mode is Ultra DMA Mode)?
