I have searched for hours and hours and cannot find a FREE dvd
formatting utility. Does anyone know where I can find a simple, easy
to use and FREE DVD format utility? It must work with any brand dvd
drive. I'm thinking of something along the lines of Panasonic's
DVDForm utility. I would gladly use this utility, but it will only
work for Panasonic DVD drives. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank
you.

You do not format DVDs or DVD Rs. Only DVD RWs could be formatted. In DVD RWs,
you need to locate "packet writing" tools. I have not found a "free" tool but
I do know that the follow tools do this:

Roxio's Drag to Disk (previous known as DirectCD)
Ahead (Nero) InCD.
Sonci's DLA

DVD-RAM disks can also be formatted. XP supports DVD-RAM disks natively if
you have a DVD Ram drive, obviously; SP2 installed; and turn off the default
XP CD burner.

Hi,

I have a related problem. I have the ASUS DRW-1608P2S which can burn DVD-RAM
disks. I bought my first disk this week but when I tried to drag files to it
in Windows XP SP2 I got an error. The folder that opened up on disk insertion
was labelled "CD Drive". I thought that perhaps it needed formatting so I ran
up Nero and formatted (erased) it as a DVD. I then wrote some data to it.
However, I would like to use the disk as a removeable drive and drag-and-drop
files to it. Under Windows Explorer I right-click the drive and choose Format
then Start. After a while it fails with "Unable to complete the format". I
was under the impression that XP had native support for DVD-RAM but it's not
working for me. Kindly tell me what I'm doing wrong.

XP has native support for READING DVD, any writing will be provided by
3rd party software.

I installed InCD from my Nero disk, rebooted and used InCD Format to format
the DVD-RAM. Now I can drag-and-drop. Thanks Bob I.
