put in the dvd drivers. when I put the sony disk into the drive it says they
aren't there.

Please say what computer you are using and the model of the dvd drive. Is
it an internal dvd drive?

Hello

Are you trying to use a DVD Rom or a CD-RW one. I have seen this happen a lot lately in other groups

This means a few specifics goes a long way toward helping someone help you.

"when i try to do a clean install I get an error message that says I need to

When you try to do a clean install of *what in the world* Rich??? DVD
***druvers*** doesn't make much sense to me.

Could you post the key words of the message and number. If you don't have
it putting eventvwr.msc in the run box and clicking on Application>use down
error to scan the errors logged at the time your problem occurred. By Sony
Disc I assume you mean media --a CD or a DVD not a CD or DVD writer. You
can also check the bios to make sure that your optical drives show up in the
list, that if you enter each item it is not off and on automatic.

This message is pretty nebulous. Most new DVD writers don't have "drivers."
Extrapolating from what you've typed I'm going to guess you mean what we see
all the time and that is that you can't find your DVD *drive.*

The most common remedy for this is Part 1 of this article--to delete the
registry filter values.

CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive appears to be missing after you install
Windows XP

This situation is consierably more rare:
CD-R drive or CD-RW drive is not recognized as a recordable device

Good luck,

Actually, "eventvwr.msc" typed in the Start Search box on the Start button
brings it up without having to take the extra step of opening Run. This is
new to Vista. Try it. It works for all similar commands.

I noticed something like that a while back but with a different Vista
'utility'. I'm going to try it with every cmd I can think of. Not all the
run box cmds for Vista are identical to XP but most are. If you see either
a good list of run cmds in Vista, Vista services are Vista processes, I'd
sure appreciate a link. I have a services guide somewhere, but haven't
found another one yet and a process guide. I may have to just make one.

Thanks much Colin.

Yeah, I don't think it has made it into Help and Support yet. Apparently it
can be affected by apps on your system. The installer for one of my apps in
x64 (the app failed to install correctly) has replaced one of the system
tools (ver). I bugged it but it means inconsistency across systems is going
to be an ongoing problem. Ver is one I have to use the Run box for as a
result. There is a lot to explore here and a lot of bugs to report.
