After I upgraded from ME to XP Prof, the DVD drive
wouldn't work - it's recognized by the computer, but I
can't run it. Someone suggested reinstalling the
software (WIN DVD 2000) but I can't get the computer to
recognize the disk. I have already uninstalled the
original software. I'm stuck!

How about just purchasing the DVD codec you require and playing the DVD with
WindowsMediaPlayer.....

I'm presuming here that the PC does recognize all other CD/DVD disks.

Thanks for the comments - unfortunately the DVD drive (I
also have a CD/RW drive that does work)didn't respond to
any disks - DVD or CD - I believe when I upgraded from ME
to XP, the old software may have been incompatible - so a
software upgrade may be the answer. Can I add the
software through the other drive or download?

I always see questions but never answers..I, too, have
the same problem but my o.s. is xp home. My dvd play
music cd's but no dvd's... I as well......STUCK..

There's a known problem with DVD players disappearing from Windows XP while
still being recognized by the BIOS. Problem is caused by an erroneous
Windows registry entry and fixed with regedit. I don't have the article
number handy but if you search the Microsoft knowledgebase, you will find
the procedure to use to fix it. Problem generally occurs after new
installation of Windows XP or installation/uninstalling certain DVD burning
software.
