My DVD drive, an NEC ND 6500A, has stopped reading any form of cd, will still
read DVD's though. It's happened before and the only way I could fix it was
to restore my computer back to when I knew it was working. It happened again
and when I tried to do a system restore my computer crashed, my keyboard
stopped working and I had to reinstall Windows from a backup copy I have on
DVD. Any help would be great I really am stumped.

Yea, that's my drive. Firmware is at version 2.24. I removed all my burning
software and still no luck. It just seemed to work one day and then not the
next, it's not a hardware thing because it's done it before and I "fixed" it
by restoring the system. Seems to be quite a common problem but people are
just being told to buy another drive.

Given the fact that many times the drive HAS partial failure,
replacement IS the correct course of action. On the other have give the
path you used to get to where you are, (reinstalling the operating
system) The backup copy SHOULD have replaced any registry entries
corrupted by installing and removing software. SO in the final version,
you have installed a known good driver setup, software setup and a good
registry, and the drive doesn't work. Do you just suppose in this case
that the drive IS really dead?

Ok, you say you removed all your burning software, do you mind me asking what
the names are and version #'s..? Burning apps can install their own drivers
that work with or along side the generic XP drivers.. If you have to many
burning apps installed it can in some cases cause problems in the registry.
Try using the cdgone.reg file to clear the upper and lower buffers in the
registry and reinstall the burning app that came with the DVD-RW drive, you
may need to update that app too..

A good read here too..

Hope this can help..
