Correct.
Get a DVD Decoder.
Your brand new DVD drive should have come with software (unless you
purchased an OEM drive). You should have something like PowerDVD. This is
the software you will need.
There are freeware codecs check here http://www.divxmovies.com/codec/
it's due to licensing issues for the MPEG2 codec.Peter said:It says I need a software or hardware decoder. WHAT?!?!? The latest

Yes, but the players mentioned are much better at playing dvd's thanJohnny said:I'll try Power DVD, I think I have it somewhere. I didn't think PowerDVD
was anything more than an alternative to media player. If I install
powerDVD, will media player then use powerDVD's decoder too?
PowerDVD is a decoder and will play the movies. It also installs the codecs
needed that will usually allow Windows Media Player to play the DVD
(although Windows Media Player is not the better option).

there are free ones about, or purchase PowerDVD on WinDVD

Use this utility to check if your decoder is compatible with MP10..
You should be able to get the decoder free from your video cards OEM, I got
mine from ATI for my Radeon 9600XT..

I thought MS were immune to laws though?
It's the other way around. Those with deep pockets get charged more.
I personally would try Cyberlink's Power DVD perfect playback you couldJH2215 said:You could always replace all other media players on the system and get free
DVD playback by finding some freeware called Media Player Classic; It give
you al the functionality of the current Media Player, minus the overly pretty
graphics. And, it plays DVDs, and with the right codec pack - I reccomend the
K-Lite pack - You can play just about any other media format.
