DVD Drive will not recognize any DVD

Under Windows XP Pro, I am able to see the drive, and it
is even labeled 'DVD Drive' in My Computer. However, the
drive will read everything fine except for DVDs. Any DVD
inserted into the drive will spin for a moment and then
stop. The drive asks for a disc to be inserted when I
try to open the DVD, and will not recognize anything. I
have run all the troublshooters I can find, and I even
made sure the drive was set to master on the secondary
IDE Controller. Anyone have a suggestion?

Have you installed the DVD decoding software that came
with your drive? XP does not include this in the OS. I
use the Cyberlink PowerPacks for XP myself.

If the DVD won't recognize any DVD, codecs aren't going to help.

The DVD drive needs to recognize the DVD before the codecs are even called
into action.

Yes, I have installed codecs and software. I installed
powerDVD that came with the drive many times, and it
reports that there is no DVD in the drive when I try to
open any DVD that I put in the drive. I've seen multiple
posts where the same issues seem to occur. The drive was
working perfectly, and stopped when I moved it into my
new system from the old win98 system. Any other
suggestions?

Well, I've tried everything, up to and including completely reinstalling
windows xp and opening up the back of my computer and checking if I knocked
something out of place (I hadn't).

I think it's just a device conflict, sadly, and there's nothing to be done
about it. Someone should write to ATI and/or pioneer and let them know.

As for myself, I'm going to get a new DVD player. It's about time anyway.
I'll post again to say if that does or doesn't work. Check back in a week or
two.

Good luck to the rest of you.

That was after seeing this same problem in a bunch of other places with
reference to ATI's AIW Radeon 8500 card, after installing which users ran
into the DVD problem you describe.
