Fresh install of Vista64 with just Adobe and Microsoft suites
installed and it seems that all DVDs just seem to hang and take
forever to read files off of them. I've also noticed at times that the
hard drive spins like mad. Anyone see behavior like this?

Hi,

It could simply be that the lens is clogged. A lens cleaner disk would
resolve this condition. These are commonly available at most outlets that
sell DVD/CD media.

I wouldn't disagree with you but the lens worked much, much better
just a day earlier using Windows XP. :)

Hi,

Understood, but keep in mind that it only takes a small amount to cause that
problem, and the installation of Vista plus those programs would have been a
considerable amount of disk work.

Other things I would look at include checking for updated controller and
motherboard drivers from the board/system manufacturer, as well as any
firmware updates from the drive maker. It's also possible that the system
memory is in heavy use, not unusual after a fresh install, and there is a
lot of disk reading going on.

Thanks - that's a good point. I forgot about updated firmware for the
devices. It's a pain that the hardware works very well for Vista but
Vista 64 provides some problems. For the most part it works pretty
well but still no official drivers for the Oki Data c5150 or 5150N and
that pops up all the time as requiring a driver (although it prints.)
It's getting there and good to see that 64 bit processing and programs
are on their way... although almost everything is in my 32 bit folder!

Thanks again..
