DVD drive problems

I recently bought a pioneer 112 DL dvd burner and removed my old CDRW ,which
was set to slave, as I have another DVD burner NEC already. I set up thenew
one exactly the same, slave.
But since installing, the NEC drive no longer refreshes and each time I
click it to open it comes up with application error, followed by the box the
box where you label your disc for backups (windows back up). I have the
latest firmwares for each one, I have checked the jumpers at the rear and
cables.
If I reboot the icon updates with which ever disc is present, for this
example, BF2142. But double clicking results in the above error. If I
remove the disc and swap it to the pioneer then refresh it, it still holds
the bf2142 icon and the pioneer drive does not update with the new icon but
does allow me to open the folder then use the applications as normal.
Any ideas??

There have been many problems with DVD/CD drives posted here. AFAICT
many problem are caused by legacy burner applications being installed
and then deleted (because they don't work on Vista).

I would start by deleting *both* devices in Hardware Manager and let
Vista re-install them on the next reboot. If they don't re-install
properly you might get a clue from that info.

took your advise and 'uninstalled' both, rebooted with exactly the same
effect, neither refresh when this disc is removed and the 'j' drive (pioneer)
when you double click with bf2142(example), it comes out 'application not
found', although I can open the drive and manual view/search etc. Autoplay
is setup

done as per your advise 'uninstalled' both and rebooted with exactly the same
effect.
Whne the disc is removed neither refresh. When I double click the pionner
'j' drive, with bf2142 (example) the eror comes up 'application not found'.
Autoplay is set to on

Sorry, but I'm out of ideas except to repeat that many problems with DVD
drives in Vista have been caused by attempts to install programs which
are not yet Vista-ready.

My approach would be to go back and examine your installed programs one
by one and try to figure out if any of them are not intended for Vista.
There are *tons* of such programs out there and I'd be surprised if you
don't have one or more of them installed on your machine.
