Hi,

I'm having problems playing DVD's on my PC (dell dimension 8200/Windows
XP)... Firstly the DVD would play, but particular sounds were missing
(i.e. speach) but now the PC will not even recognise the DVD in the
drive.

This is not a problem with the DVD's as they play on other players. I
did recently reinstall Windows and it would play DVD's before I did the
reinstall.

Any ideas on the problem and how I could fix it?

Cheers.

Your probably having codec problems Will.
D\load and install Media Player Classic from here:
http://www.divx-digest.com/software/media_player_classic.html
It will play most stuff for you.

Only getting certain sounds and not voice may indicate you are only hearing
the back channels. Have you checked where your speakers are plugged in and
run a test on them?

Why did you reinstall Windows? Have you run any programs that might have
altered your DVD drive? Have you checked your settings for the IDE
controllers and the DVD drive in Device Manager? Do you have another DVD
drive you could try? Any firmware updates for your current DVD drive?
