DVD drive issue

first things first, i know nothing about computers. alright well im having an issue with my DVD drive, now it used to play dvds perfectly, with out issues now for some reason it doesn't even read disc, it just says there is no disc in the drive, now i know the discs work, because ive tryed all the ones ive put into the computer into a dvd player and they work fine so its not the disc's fault, i have tryed using my old computer which has windows xp or something and they no longer work on that either i've tryed updating the computers drivers, they claim to be up to date, if anyone knows how to fix/solve this problem it will be greatly appreciated! i've just simply run out of ideas
