After I installed Vista 64x on my machine, my DVD drive started to randomly
hang in the middle of installations from discs, or in the middle of ripping
music. I assumed it was my drive going bad, but I order a new drive (Asus
this time, instead of the old LITE-ON) and it's doing the same thing. I'm
beginning to think it's a Vista problem.

After you installed Vista 64-bit, did you then install all the 64-bit
drivers for your hardware, including the motherboard? If not, that's your
next step.

I installed the drivers that came with the motherboard. They say they are 64
bit.

And what about the drivers for the DVD drive that is supplied by the DVD manufacturer ???????

If its an IDE drive (he refers to his old LiteOn so the new one probably is)
then there are no drivers to install.
