I just installed the 32-bit Vista Ultimate on my laptop yesterday. I
installed a couple of programs from CDs and eveything was working fine.
Tonight I installed a driver for the LightScribe program and hadn't
installed the program first. I now can't use my DVD Drive. When I put a DVD
or CD in the drive the light comes on but nothing else. I can't see my DVD
Drive in Device Manager or in Windows Explorer. Vista just doesn't see it. I
didn't try to use the DVD Drive today before installing the driver. I am not
sure if the drive installation caused the problem or I had the problem
before and didn't know it.

I tried to do a system restore three times at two different points and it
didn't complete. It said there was an error. I have found that more times
than not system restore doesn't work but I gave it a try.

I have tried everything I know to do and nothing worked. My only thought is
to reformat and install Vista again. Does anyone have any idea what I can do
to get Vista to see the DVD Drive short of starting over? Any help would be
appreciated!!

Sandra

I spent the better part of today reading newsgroups for answers to get my
DVD Drive back on my laptop. Nothing seemed to work until I turned off my
laptop, took the drive out and put it back in. I turned the laptop back on
and it searched for a driver, found it and now the DVD Drive works again. I
may lose it again later but for now it is working. I have turned off my
laptop and turned it back on and
it is still there.

I did go ahead and take your advice and download the latest software and
will use the utility if I have anymore problems with LightScribe. Thank you
so much for answering my notice.

i seem to be having close to the same problem as you sandra, only mine is
with my desktop...two month old HP DVD 1040i, worked perfectly till last
weekend...then all of the sudden it stopped showing up in my computer...and
when i put a disk in, NOTHING! it's so frustrating! i've got a dual boot
setup (xp pro/vista), drive works fine for xp...it shows up in my bios ok...i
just don't know what to do besides reinstall...which i HATE doing, but i just
don't know what else to try...i did give that link that nice person left for
you a try but it STILL doesn't work!

any help will be HUGELY appreciated!

yup, it does...but it also has a yellow mark next to it, and when i double
click on it, it says "this device cannot start" code 10...last night, i
ALMOST reinstalled vista, it was fully recognized then...but when i backed
out and went back...it still didn't show in my computer...i'm thinking i'll
just reinstall unless someone comes up with a fix for me...i do appreciate
the tips i've gotten here though...
