I bought a new cd drive, an LG one, I hooked it up properly with the correct
hardware settings(jumpers and all). Then when Windows XP Home Edition SP2
starts the little blue status thing passes 2 times then stops a quarter of
the way and the computer freezes. But when I use my old CD drive it works
perfectly fine. I've tried hooking it up as a slave and cable select and I
get the same problem.

Have you tried setting it up on the secondary IDE channel as a master..?
Usually the Primary IDE channel has the HD, perhaps two HD's.. The Secondary
IDE channel for optical drives is the norm usually and can accommodate two
devices master or slave or (CS) computer select as well.. If you are adding
the optical drive to the primary channel and the HD jumper is set to single
master (SM) position you might have a problem.. So, what IDE channel are you
trying to use..?

I am actually using a PCI to IDE converter and It is on the secondary
channel. The reason for this is that my hard drives are connected to the
only IDE ATA cable port on my mother board because the rest was ment for SATA.

What do you have on the converters primary channel..? Have you tried setting
the drive up as a master..? What are the specs for this IDE converter, or is
it like a raid card..?
Can you provide a link to it's OEM site for the IDE converter..?

Is the BIOS of the Promise card at the latest version? I remember that they had some issue with
CD's and DVD's. I have used the Ultra 133TX2 for many years but I have only Hard drives hooked to
it and have never had an issue. I have used their 66, 100, and the 133 with no problems.

Well, it's an older discontinued card and your trying to use a newer LG drive
on it, sounds like a newer computer too, right.. You may need to go with
their suggested replacement or see the link below..

You could try the Promise e-support too, give them all the pertinent
info/specs on optical drives used, the Ultra 100 TWX card your using along
with the make & model computer, to see what they might suggest you do..
Another option would be to uninstall & reinstall the card & drivers or try
an older CD drive just to see if it works.. The best bet though, just might
be to upgrade the converter and retire that old tx2 card..
It's your call..
