DVD drive does not recognise DVDs

My DVD drive has suddenly ceased to recognise DVDs! It is a DVD-ROM drive
and works perfectly well running games from CD, however it cannot play DVDs.

When a DVD is inserted, not only does autorun not start, if I go to My
Computer, the DVD does not show as being in the DVD drive and if I click on
the drive, it says "Please insert disc".

Having tried to look through HP support, let me add that I am *definitely*
using a DVD and it is *definitely* a DVD drive! <g>

I know it is not an issue with the DVD, as it happens with several DVDs,
including those that worked perfectly well last week.

I have no idea what's wrong with it and would be eternally grateful if
anyone can offer any advice! Last week DVDs played perfectly fine, now they
do not. Games still run without any trouble, so the drive itself can't be
broken.

Please please help me!

Try applying a firmware update. The drive manufacturer's website should have
them for downloading.

I tried downloading a firmware update. Now it still doesn't recognise the
DVD, but it does seem to take longer to decide that and it seems to be trying
harder to read it.

Any other suggestions?

Have you tried a "Lens Cleaner" disk. You can pick one up at
Office Depot for ~$10.00.

claret101 - I had a similar problem with a Dell, CD's
worked fine - only DVD's had a problem. Contacted Dell
support, and after spending about an hour with them, they
were able to determine it was a faulty drive - they
shipped a replacement within 2 days.

I'm not certain if this is your difficulty, however; have
you tried to call your mftr support? I believe you said
the drive was HP, you may want to check with them, and
see if there is a known issue with this drive model.

HTH and YMMV.
