DVD Drive "disappears"

Brand new Sony Vaio, VGN-C190G, Currently Windows XP Media Centre Edition. Most times the PC is started up, the Drive is not recognised and doesn't even open when the button is pushed. The PC does recognise it though as the drive can be opened before windows loads, e.g. on the BIOS screen.
From hearing about this sort of problem, possible culprit is Roxio but I'm unsure, any suggestions as to cause and fix?
 
If it is a brand new product contact the Customer service dept at Sony.
you could however remove Roxio and then try it.
