I am running out of options with a DVD drive not working.
A little about me; I am a Microsoft Systems Engineer. And have work with
computers systems for the last twenty years.
I work for the Federal Government in DC; I am the Team Lead for implementing
Windows Vista Enterprise, I even have the Genuine Microsoft Stamp. I have
worked with Vista for sense it was Bata. This week I am enrolled in the
“Implementing and Maintaining Windows Vista Course.
I bought a new Gateway Laptop (NX860X) that meets the Vista logo
requirements and have Windows Vista Ultimate. I have rebuilt my laptop twice
to gain experience. To date I have spent over $ (A Lot-Do Not tell the Wife)
of my own money on the setup I have at home. And I am a VERY UNHAPPY
CAMPER!!!!!
About three weeks ago my DVD R/W stopped working. I went through the
troubleshooting steps listed below.
1) Looked for updates (drivers & Patches)- it stated I had the most current
drivers
2) Downloaded the latest BIOS & Chip set from Gateway
3) Uninstalled and let the system find the DVD
4) Removed unsigned drivers I found.
5) Looked for MS Knowledge Base articles
6) Instead the mobile device mangers 6 ( I have a AT&T smart phone-worth a
shot)
7) Logged on as the local Administrator and ran from the command prompt “SFC
/SCANNOW†no errors
8) Tried a restore using VSS (only went back to 6/16/2007) it failed.
9) Created a different Administrator level account
10) Called Gateway at least three times. Their answer was “MICROSOFT PATCHES
DID IT†because they have several incidents on the same thing with different
hardware.
I only have two options left
1) Set fire to the laptop and hope insurance will replace it- just kidding ;-)
2) Whine to see who has a solution- Hi There!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

** I have screen Shots**

Sarcasm is never appreciated; the community is a place we professionals work
together not to find an answer, not criticize others. I will try the KB
Thank You

You didn't mention or I may have missed it, do you have any CD/DVD creation
software installed on the system; if yes, did it come preinstalled or was
this a product you installed and what product and version?

you like most of us probably do not have a floppy to try a dos boot disk to
check the cd.
the drive may be bad, hey just a guess

After editing the registry as directed in the KB the DVD was back, Thank you
