DVD Drive Always Searching. Arrrrrrrrrgh!!!

Hi

If I use my DVD drive and then take the disk out (after burning or listening
to a cd for example) the drive will start whirring every couple of minutes
as if it is searching for disk even though there is nothing in there (to say
that this is irritating would be an understatement!).

If I don't use the DVD drive then it doesn't try to search for anything.

Any advice on how to stop my machine from annoying me would be appreciated.

Does the program that statrts when a dvd/cd is inserted do it? Try ir with
machine turned off (except drive)
