DVD Doesn't write

Hi
If anyone out there can help with this I'd appreciate it.
I've got a Toshiba Satellit M30-604 and for some reason or another my
machine won't write to DVD even though I use the correct disks (DVD-RW) and
the machine says on the label that it's a DVD-RW drive. Toshiba don't seem
interested in the problem too much. When I contacted their support (via a
high rate 'phone number) I was treated like a kid and told to uninstall the
DVD drive, Re-boot and let windows do the rest. I'd already done that as I
used to work for IBM so I'm not that thick. Support then told me that I would
probably need the machine serviced. I did mention that the machine is about
2.5 years old and that this was the first time I'd tried to use DVD's. Didn't
cut any ice though.
The machine writes CD's ok. The software I am using is EasySystems Drag'n
Drop CD+DVD. Anybody got any ideas or am I missing something pretty basic.
Regards Allan

Sounds like a laser problem, different lasers are used to write CD's and
DVD's.
Try a laser lens cleaning disc and try a different burning program, you can
get trial versions of Nero, Roxio, Alcohol 120% etc.

You generally can't drag and drop to a DVD-R or RW (that's + or -). You can
to a DVD-RAM.

You should use Roxio or Nero and create a data DVD.

One more thing to try.... Double click on My Computer. Right click on the
optical drive and select Properties. From the Recording tab, ensure the
Enable Recording on this Drive is checked.

Hi Cari

Good shot 'fraid it missed tho. AS I said earlier I'm using EasySystems
Drag'n
Drop CD+DVD software which came preloaded on the machine. Roxio doesn't fly
either and yes the enable recording on this drive flag is checked.
Thanks for the help tho..

Hi Cari

Yep plays a DVD fine. Apparently according to my friendly Pc world chappie
there's a bit of a hoo hah going on twixt Bill Gates, Roxio EasySystems and
the like about drag and dropping stuff to DVD via Windows (he mustn't do it,
naughty boy, like he cares) So I'm going to have crack at Nero as Kenny
suggested earlier, sorry Kenny.
I'll let you know how I get on.

Hi Kenny, Cari

Thanks Kenny will do however Nero wasn't interested, it just sat there
waiting for the drive to come ready. CDBurnerXP Pro said that there's no
media present.
I'm about as close to a gnats dinkie to buying an external USB drive as I
can get 'cos now I understand nothing and I'm close to believing that there's
either something I'm missing or there's a fault on the drive.

I'll try the other two programs Kenny but I don't hold out much hope
(defeatist or what) :-)

I've also written to Toshiba see if they've got any ideas.

Cheers all.

Hi All, Well I think I'm getting somewhere. The support team at Toshiba
'phoned me last week and the upshot is that I'm taking the machine to see
them tomorrow 06/06/06. However I still think that there is a fault that's
been there since day 1. The lady (Erika) said the she'd swop the drive out to
isolate but it may cost me for a new drive.
So, hows this:- The drive in the machine is a 1x drive (which is about as
quick as a snail in revers) and if it's going to cost me loads a money I
think I'd be better off buying multiple speed external USB drive, disable the
internal one and use the USB one for CD's and DVD's. Comments?

Regards Allan

oh dear, red face time. I took my machine to the nice people at Toshiba and
the support person ther said that there's nothing wrong with it and it's a
media problem. Only certain types of DVD-R/-RW are supported on my machine
and the nice person gave me a couple of DVD's. She was awfully nice about it
and didn't even charge me for the call on her time. Now THAT'S what I call
customer service.
That'll teach me to RTFM in future.
