For the past year or more, I've used Ripit4me in conjunction with the
venerable DVD Decrypter to back up all of my DVD's to the hard drive. Then
I compressed them to h.264 mpeg4 using Nero, making them viewable anywhere
on my network.
Yesterday I finally encountered my first DVD that just won't back up
properly - Sony's latest James Bond flick, Casino Royale.
During the backup process, it finds an unusually high number of IFO
files - somewhere around 100, rather than the normal dozen or less.
Then it starts to decrypt, and instead of the normal 10 to 14 minutes, the
drive appears to be a bit noisy, and shows a time of between 24 and 200
hours. Ripping speed is initially 4x, but drops to .2x, and eventually
hovers between that and zero.
I thought perhaps the drive was going bad, but then I tested it with
another movie, and it worked fine.
Anyone else have suggestions on a new program I could use in order to keep
watching my movie collection on my PC, without having to shuffle my DVD's
around? One of the computers doesn't even HAVE a DVD drive, so obviously
this is frustrating.
For watching the resulting files, I use VLC Media Player, but if I can't
get the DVD to mpeg4, I'm stuck.
