Installed Windows 2000 Professional - when trying to view
my dvd movie a window comes up saying "no Windows 2000
compatible DVD decoder or decoder software". Where can I
download/obtain either the decoder or software. The
laptop cd-dvd is a Toshiba DVD-Rom SD-C2402. Thank you.

There may be one or more solutions to your problem.

- If your laptop has hardware DVD decoder built-in, you just need to find
and install the software for it. Some Toshiba laptops had this, most
notably the Portege 7000 series. Other brands had some hardware decoders as
well. You'll need to research your particular brand and model laptop to
find out if you have it, and find the software for it.

- If your laptop does not have a hardware DVD decoder, then you probably
will not want to add one. Marge made a PCMCIA card decoder, and I've seen a
few other solutions, but overall you're better off getting a software
decoder. Any retail DVD player software like PowerDVD or WinDVD will
contain a software codec to decode the DVD video. I've seen some free ones,
like VideoLAN, but they're not very easy to use compared to PowerDVD.

- If your laptop uses certain ATI or NVidia video chipsets, then the correct
software for these video chipsets will have the DVD player software
included. Again, check with your manufacturer's website for info.
