I am fustrated. I have learned not to fix something that
is not broken. I loaded Windows XP onto my Laptop that
came with Windows 98. Of course now my computer is
slower but the main problem now is I cant play DVDs. The
message says it does not detect a dvd decoder. I do not
have the original software that came with my laptop
(windows 98). The message said something about
reloading. Anyway I have tried to get help on line but
the wait time is very long. Is there something I can do
or do I need to purchase a decoder? PLease help. I
loved my program and was very happy with it but loved the
way Windows XP worked on my friends computers so I spent
200.00 on it but now I can't play DVDs that before worked
great!!! Thank you so much look forward to the help so I
can use my DVD player. THere is no DVD tab under options
in teh Media player menu. Hilary OKelley

Windows XP, like every other version of Windows, does not have native DVD
playback support. In order to play DVDs, you need to install third party
DVD software such as PowerDVD, WinDVD, etc. Once installed, you can either
use the app or Windows Media Player to play DVDs. As far as your computer
being slow, it depends on the processor type/speed and the amount of RAM
that you have available to the OS. You might want to visit the website of
the manufacturer of your laptop, to see if there are patches and updates
available, and pay particular attention to BIOS upgrades.

Reinstall the software you were using in Windows 98.... probably PowerDVD or
WinDVD. No version of Windows has EVER come with DVD codecs (licensing
issue) so you must have had the software before.

One thing you can try is to use a friend's computer and go
to the laptop manufacturer's website and see if you can
download the software from them since it is their computer
and odds are the DVD software came as part of the computer
bundle. Good luck.
