I have a 2004 hp computer with windows xp installed. We have always been
able to watch dvds on it before I recently updated it to the newest version
of the windows media player, and it will nop longer play dvds. the error
message says there is no decoder installed. I have never had to install it
before, did updating it delete something?

Neither WMP10 nor the latest, WMP11, comes with the ability to play DVDs.
You must purchase and/or install your own DVD player. From what you said I
have to assume you had some kind of DVD decoder/player installed before
upgrading. Did you not get a CD from HP, with the system, when you bought
it? My guess is there may be a DVD player of some kind on it.
