DVD-CDRW drive no longer recognizes a disc

Hi,

It used to play DVDs and CDs flawlessly up until today. I don't
recall installing any software that would have affected it. And, I
don't know what company makes it. I think it's a generic one. It is
using a Windows driver. I have tried uninstalling the device and
letting Windows recognize it and reinstall the driver for it.

The drive is recognized by Windows. Each time I put either a DVD or CD
(game for instance) Windows asks me to insert a disc!

Sorry if this is a repost. I didn't see it appear in this NG.

Any ideas?

You probably want this:

If possible, try installing the drive in another computer to test it, if it
fails to read media in another computer, then toss it and get a new one..

Thanks. I think it's shot. A replacement is on it's way.

I had the same problem as you. Also tried all the wonderful ideas from the
experts. but I disabled the cd-rw via the device manager and then rebooted
and windows then will indicate finding your cd-rw, just click on the boxes
that appear on start up.

Well, Windows does recognize the drive. The drive just won't
recognize a DVD or CD. I tried uninstalling it and rebooting and
letting Windows reinstall it but I still can't read a disc from it. I
also tried a DVD cleaner but to no avail.

Thanks!

i had similar problem, it can be solved easily, but don't ask me how it
happened in the 1st place as i have no idea either.

Open "My Computer", right click on the DVD drive and choose Properties.

Go to Hardware tabpage, in the list of drive there, double click the DVD
drive, and a properties box appears.

Go to DVD Region, and see what's in the "Current Region".

If you live in US, it should be Region 1. As I live in Asia, my region is 3.

When I bought the drive, there is "No region selected" written, so I tought
it was good. After using few times, it somehow changed to Region 1 by
itself. of course this made all DVD not readable. then, i had to change to
Region 3.

It's a problem now, because now I have only 3 changes chance left, from
initial 5.

anyone has any idea why?

It was already set to region 1 <s>.

Good luck with your problem! I have no idea why Windows only allows 4
changes to this property!

Blame the movie studios for wanting to control world wide distribution of
their movies, not XP...
j;-j

It's not an XP limitation, it is built into the optical drive from the
factory...

It ended up being a defective DVD drive. I received a replacement
yesterday and installed it and no more problems reading discs!
