DVD Capture

My new HP comuter came loaded with Windos Movie Making and Windows Media
Player software. I am trying to use Windows Movie Making to add background
music and edit old 8 mm and super 8mm family movies, which presently a local
company transfer to DVD format for me.
My computer has a CD-Writer/DVD rom combo drive. It also enables me to edit
digital photos, record music CDs, watch DVD movies and archive photos and
data to CDs.
When I place our family's DVD movie in the CD/DVD drive I am able to capture
it with the Windos Media Player, but if I try to capture it with the Windows
Movie Maker a sign appears reading "No capture device has being detectet"; in
other other words, it cannot detect the CD/DVD rom drive.
My question is: What type of device do I need to add to my computer to
capture the movie to edit it?
I would like to edit some film, add some "fancy" transitions add titles and
background music.
My wife and I wish to send these DVD's to our grandchildren, which are about
the same age as our son's when these movies were made.
Thank you
MAANY

It's best not to go to a DVD first and then edit it in Movie Maker and back
to another DVD.... each generation of re-compression results in some quality
degradation...

..... but if you're already on DVD and want to get it into Movie Maker, check
the Importing Source Files > Video > Discs page of my website.

You do not need any devices at all. All you need is a program like Nero 6
Reloaded. Using that program you can convert DVD files (they have a VOB
extension) into MPeg-2 files. Once that is done you can edit the video within
Nero, create menus etc and burn it back to a DVD disk (Ok you do need a DVD
burner if you have not already got one) I do this and similar operations almost
daily!!!

I have just started writing a tutorial on Nero which is on my website...at the
moment the only section is Editing a Video captured from a non copyrighted DVD,
I think that sort of fits your question :)

There are some quite spectacular effect that can be added within Nero, but
disappointingly it seems you can only apply one at a time (I have yet to
confirm that) Fortunately that's not the end of the story. Once your DVD has
been captured to your hard drive by NEro you can use one of its other function
"Export" and save/convert the MPeg video to the standard DV-AVI format used by
Movie Maker...when finished in Movie Maker you can import the finished movie
back into Nero and create a Video as outline (roughly) above.

With regard to your comments about detecting etc with Media Player. MEdia
Player can NOT capture DVD video. It can display it on screen which is of
course a completely different thing. With regard to Movie Maker capturing...it
can ONLY capture from a DV camera or source (which may be an analog to digital
converter)...You DO NOT need any of that kit for the job at hand.

You can download a trial version of the Nero software from this link
http://www.nero.com/en/index.html I think it lasts 30 days. If you buy a DVD
burner you will want this type of software anyway. My personal opinion of Nero,
which seems to be supported by most, is that it is an excellent tool, its
operation is not always intuitive but once you understand it it becomes a very
easy to use program. I scrapped Easy CD/DVD Version 6 in favour of Nero 6.

If you take the suggested route and need specific help, you can ask here or
keep checking on the tutorial on my site. Hope that helps a bit
