dvd burning

I have a dvd burner on my laptop and want to copy some dvds I have to share
with family but don't know if I need special software to do this. Guess I
need one of those for dummies books. lol If anybody could help I would
appreciate it.

The notebook probably came with the appropriate software.... look in the
manual and it should tell you.

I tried, not much help there, no manual about the burner. the programs I have
that have to do with the burner are windows movie maker and power dvd.

Neither of those are DVD burning packages. They are viewing packages.

Look for something like Roxio, Nero, PowerDirector or WinDVD Creator.
