DVD Burner on USB - Nero verif. fails - DMA?

Hi there,

I have a problem with my DVD burner ASUS DRW-1608 P2. This is an
internal burner but in an enclosure, and connected through USB (2.0,
Enhanced controller, Intel 82801).

In Nero, burn goes ok, but always fails in the verification stage. When
I did the trick of un-installing IDE drivers and burner driver (along
with some registry stuff, see http://www.michna.com/kb/WxDMA.htm), this
helped a lot but at the very end of the verify, in the last second,
still one error.

In Nero InfoTool, my burner does NOT show under the IDE controllers,
though, but under the USB port. This seems logic, right: it's connected
on USB. BUT, how could the DMA settings have affected my problem? Does
USB port have DMA capabilities? And if yes, why are there no
configurable settings for it under its Device Manager config? Is there
still any relation with the IDE controller?

Does anyone have the slightest idea what could be causing my problem?
The burner works fine on someone else's PC, no verification errors, and
also connected through USB.

Bye,
E.

(thought posting this to alt.comp.hardware, but here it seems more
suitable for WinXP)

First, USB will not provide enough power for the drive; it will need
external power from AC adapter. Second, when burning leave hands off
the computer to prevent making coasters from buffer underruns.

Of course. The drive is in an enclosure (VIPower.com) with its own AC
adapter.

And yes. Not touching anything seems to help: less verification errors.

But what baffles me is: how come the burning stage does not produce any
errors?

Let's consider the one verification error at the very end of the
verification stage: is this most probably an IRQ problem, or a DMA
problem?

Lastly. How to find out what DMA and IRQ my USB burner is using? No
such properties in device manager for USB ports. Neither in the DVD
burner's properties.

So where's the pro who just tells me straight away what's wrong here??
It's driving me insane this problem!! 11 DVDs wasted!!!

Your DVD burner is not using any DMA/IRQs since it is not directly connected
to the motherboard. It is your USB ports that are using IRQs setting (DMA may
not be available for USBs). Your problem may be caused by trying to use a
standard internal DVD burner in a "less than compatible" external enclosure.
If you were to "scan" this newsgroup you will see similar posts like yours,
which stated that not all external drive enclosures are "created" to be
compatible across every PC hardware configuration.
