I have a NEC 3500a that has been burning ok in Roxio. It shows up in the
hardware manager as NEC 3500a. When I want to burn a movie I have put
together in WMM, it does not recognize the drive. How to I tell WMM to use
this burner? I am running XP Pro, SP2.

Ok, I did not know that. There is a selection to burn the movie created
there, I didn't know that it wasn't supported. Actually, I have a bigger
problem in that I can only read from the drive, I cannot use it any more to
burn anything. It reads CD and DVD, but will not burn either format. I have
Roxio. The device manager has identified the drive properly, but in Windows
explorer it shows as a CD-ROM drive. Any thoughts on fixing this, or where to
go for an answer? I have tried re-installing. This happened I think after I
installed SP2 for XP.
Thanks!!!

My dual CD/DVD burner shows as a CD drive in Explorer also... and by default
the recording option is unchecked. When I want to use it to burn a disc in
Movie Maker, I have to check the option.

I right-click the drive in Explorer > Properties > Recording Tab > check
'Enable CD recording on this drive' > Ok > no need to reboot the computer or
restart MM2.

That selection is checked already. This happened about the time I installed
SP2. It was working fine before that. Windows Explorer had it labelled as a
DVD-RW drive, and it worked fine with Roxio software. Now it does not burn,
so I am thinking there is a software fix??? Should I be posting this on
another forum?

Hello,

Try using the Fix-It utility on my web site....make certain to write
down the condition report on your drive BEFORE you change anything. The
Fix-It utility does not work for all combo drives so do not be too upset if
it fails to Fix It for you.

Thank you both for all the help. This is what happened: I had flashed my NEC
3500A with the 2.18 firmware. Then it stopped working. I had gone to the
Roxio site to download updates for the suite (6), but I missed seeing several
updates including a "drive" update that was described on their site as
"updates the drive support if your drive is not working...". Well, after
updating to version 6.1-48, my drive was recognized properly in Windows
Explorer and I am able to burn DVDs and CDs now. So the NEC 2.17 firmware
version works on older software, but the newer 2.18 firmware NEEDS to have
DVD/CD burning software to be at its most recent updates. Thanks again!!!
