I've transferred DV into my system via firewire from a Canon DV. It seems like much lower quality when playing back via RealOne or MS Media player. My goal is to edit then cut a DVD. Are there any tricks to maximize quality

There could be two things going on with Windows Media Player:
1. Windows Media Player doesn't correctly deinterlace DV-AVI content when
playing it back, so you'll see interlace artifacts (jaggies) when playing
back the content.
2. There is a setting in Windows Media Player which plays back DV at quarter
resolution. To change this, go to Tools and click on Options. Click on the
performance tab, and then click the 'Advanced' button. Drag the slider for
'Digital Video' all the way to Large.

If you used Movie Maker to capture from your camcorder, then you've got a
digital copy of the bits, so the quality will be the same as the video on
your tape.

Cheers
