I'm connecting my Sony camcorder to my Windows XP desktop via firewire and
WMM days it doesn't detect it anymore. I didn't have this problem before I
installed SP2. Are there any fixes for it?

Can't see installing SP2 as being the culprit. So with your computer turned
off, you hooked up your camera, turned it on, fired up your PC and Windows
didn't detect new hardware?

If that is the case, to isolate the cause quickly, take your camera and
firewire to a "shop" and have them test it. If it works there on an SP2
computer, then probably your firewire socket/card has failed. A place like
Future Shop shouldn't charge you to do that simple test so no-one else should
either.

If the socket/card has failed and you have an available PCI slot, a new card
isn't expensive.

Unfortunately, hardware fails far more often than it should.

I agree but it is also possible that it is the cable.
Make sure when you take it to the computer shop (or a friend's computer)
that you try it with your cable as well as a new cable to be certain it
isn't simply a bad cable.

Hey Wojo,

The sole purpose of taking the camera and firewire to a "shop" is to test
the firewire. If the camera works with her firewire, it must be the card. If
it doesn't, it must be the firewire. Either way, she can isolate the problem
"quickly" and get what she needs while she's there.

I understand that but I wanted to make sure Krystal did so I went a little
more into detail.
I will also mention that it isn't unheard of for the firewire port on the
camera to be bad so if it doesn't work with either your cable OR a new one
it could be the port on the camera.

I tried using the original cable to a Mac computer at a lab I work at and it
still didn't work. I will try going to a Best Buy or Fry's Electronics to
see if they can take a look at it.
