DV-AVI files play choppy after backup

I just installed a second hard drive to backup my movies
(Western Digital, 7200rpm, 200GB, 8MB cache). We all know
how much space they take up. When I tried playing in WMP
just to see that the backup went ok, the video/audio was
choppy. I'm pretty sure I've read on this board before
that if working with video kept on a second drive, this
might happen but I just wanted to double check that
everything with my files is still ok. I copied one of the
smaller videos back to my desktop and it plays fine.

Is this normal? After copying back to desktop and the
video is ok, I figure the file integrity is unaltered.
Just looking to confirm my suspicions.

Thanks,
Steve

Take into consideration also the amount of RAM your system has and the
RAM/Speed of your graphics card.

I have three hard drives in my main PC, but all three drives are 7200rpm 8mb
cache drives, on ATA133 IDE connections, and I have not noticed any
'choppiness' even with a 66gb AVI file.

If you have the drive on an IDE port with a slow optical drive, some folks
have noticed a slow down. Ensure the hard drive is working at the correct
DMA. Right click on My Computer, select Properties, from the Hardware tab,
select Device Manager..... click on IDE Controllers, then look in the
Advanced Settings tab..... mine are all on Ultra DMA Mode 6. My DVD burner
is showing as Ultra DMA Mode 2.

If all is ok with the pc set up then this shouldn't happen. I swap files all
over the place, having an external drive which I can use with my laptop if
I'm away, and various swappable and raid drives on my video editing machine.
How is the drive connected? and to what?

It is the second drive on the same IDE port as the
original hard drive. I am running a Dell Dimension 8300
and both drives (internal) are set as cable select as per
directions by Dell. I have 512 MB RAM with my 3.0GHz
processor. I used the disk that came with drive for
installation, also recommended by Dell.

My primary IDE channel has device 0 at Ultra DMA 2 and
device 1 at PIO mode.
Secondary IDE channel has both device 0 and 1 at Ultra
DMA 2. I now have 2 hard drives and 2 disk drives so I am
not sure which ones are on which channels. Should I
assume the hard drives are on primary channel and the
disk drives on secondary. If that assumption holds true
then the mode on device 1 (second on the ribbon) would be
the new HD with PIO mode. Is that causing my choppiness?

Thanks again.

Two more thing. I've tried to update the drivers for both
channels and everything seems up to date. the model # of
my new Western digital drive is WD2000JBRTL

DMA Mode 2 would seem low for the specs of the PC. 80 wire ribbon cables or
40 wire?

Currently your second (new) hard drive, in PIO mode is running well below
its capable speed.

This definitely a big part of the problem if not the main cause... If the
DMA mode is not selectable in the windows properties page of the IDE
channel, you need to first change the IDE channels' settings in the BIOS.
This generally requires some computer knowledgeable person. So go grab a
friend. Otherwise if doing it yourself, note that Dell's support site would
have all the details about the BIOS screens for your pc. Proceed with
caution.

This is a re-send as the one sent yesterday does not seem to have made
it to the newsgroup...
Hi Steve,
