how can i prevent dust from damagming my pcs. they are located in a very
dusty invonronment. it is a factory that deals with sandblasting and the
dust is everywhere. our pc fans get all mangled and stop working eventualy.
anyone know of a filter system that works for them? most filters to prevent
fine dust particals are too thick for must pc fans to pull air thru.

that still lets dust in. the holes are too big.

The super porous fan filters typically used in PCs are really only to
eliminate cat/dog hair, carpet fuzz, fluff, and other rather large
particles.

How big are the particles? There are dust-enclosures that use filters
that take out particles down to 1 micron (and I'm sure at exponential
price hikes there are some that can eliminate even smaller particles).
A Google search on "PC industrial dust enclosure" turns up some
possibilities, like http://www.dustshield.com/. This stuff isn't cheap;
their DS191 CPU enclosure costs $450 and the replacement filters are
$99. I haven't bothered to investigate just what is a Nema-rated dust
enclosure.

Do you access the drives on the computer a lot (such as the CD ROM or
floppy?) ... if not ... then you can build a box made out of furnace filters
and place your tower inside this filter enclosure ... all you really need
are 4 filters and some duct tape. Cut the filters to the size you need and
tape together. Cut holes out in the back for the hot air to ventilate out
of the tower easily. Pretty cheap, simple and practical ... I know someone
that does that for their workshops .. but again I remind you, this only is
feasible if you don't access your drives a whole lot and if the computer is
on most of the time.

whatever you end up using
just make sure you take advantage of the alarms and shutdown features
most MB BIOS makers implement
set the alarm sensor to say 5 degree's below the shutdown sensor

that way if the cpu fan clogs up and fails the cpu and or MB will not get
damaged
in the process.

you can look into the so-called "noiseless" cpu coolers and PSU coolers
they offer lots of fins and outlets with no fan

I have not used one but have fitted them for clients high-end vga cards and
cpu's
with no complaints

If filters dont turn out to be your solution, then you could try using KVM
switches, and relocating your PCs in a cleaner environment, while leaving
the keyboard/video/mouse in the dirty environment.

Oh, I hope you provide adequate protection to your lungs - much more
important than a PC.

Mark.

Sounds silly but why not try a womens tights? Put over the main
holes into the case and clean every week or two?

Thanks.

Works well for me, cheap and good, ladies' nylon hose. Double or triple
layer if you need more.

thats a little steep in price. know of any other solutions off hand?

Well, rather than drawing in air to blow it across heatsinks and
components to cool them, you could look into getting a chiller kit to
water cool the stuff and put the radiator outside the case. Then seal
up the case. However, that's probably not a cheap solution, either, but
at least you can continue to use the floppy and CD-ROM drives as opposed
to the suggestions of encasing the system case in nylon hose.
