Bond.........James Bond.
Hi
I've got me a virus. Its called Dust.exe.
I first noticed it when I booted and was presented with a message that
"Dust.exe could not be found". I searched my PC for Dust.exe and found
three entries.
Windows Temp.
Windows SYS32.
Windows SYS.
They were all the same size.
I think the original file came down in a Kazaa download and is
initiated by running the file. When I ran the file I noticed a lot of
H/D activity and then all the comfiles in my download directory became
un-usable.i.e Click on the file and you are told "this program has
performed an illegal operation" etc
I ran Norton and Spybot. Neither found "Dust". That's worrying.
I ran "findfiles" again and deleted all instances of Dust, rebooted,
they were back! Obviously some other program is installing dust.
What i did
I ran findfiles again, deleted all instances again. Did a registry
search and deleted all references to Dust. Deleted the contents of my
download directory.
That was an hour ago. Since then I've rebooted and been online. I've
just run findfiles and got the all clear. I can't say in all honesty
that the virus has gone. Time will tell.
There is not much info on the net about this virus. There is a
reference to a virus "Angeldust" which performs in the same manner. It
is 10 years old so could be a variant.
If you find any more info, please post
Peace
