Duplication after Import

I have 2 email accounts -- one Yahoo and one Yahoo Small Business. I have
set up both accounts on Outlook. I use Outlook 2003 at home and Outlook 2002
at work. I want to be able to move back and forth between the two. When I
leave home after working there, I export to a pst file and then import that
to my personal folder at work. I check off the box "replace duplicates with
items I import." Nonetheless, I get a copy of everything. This is not the
same problem as others are having (and not me yet, thankfully) of receving
duplicate email messages because all my contacts were duplicated (and those
contacts are not sent from my Yahoo account like the email is). Does anyone
know what I need to do to be able to synchronize without duplication?

Hi Rioman,
don´t import your pst file,
please use FILE > OPEN > DATAFILE
I would create a new profile and after that open your current pst file!

Thanks for the response. Are you suggesting I create a separate email
profile each time I move from machine to machine? The problem is not having
two accounts flow into one outlook (I use a rule to redirect one account into
its own folder). The question is: how do I move from one machine to the next
and be able to have the latest data file in use at the second machine.
Should I simply export a pst file when I finish at one and, rather than
export it to the second machine, simply overwrite (or rename and save) the
older pst file?

You have to. Profiles are not shareable between machines, since they're
kept in the Registry.

in use at the second machine.

See http://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/backupandrestore.htm

Overwriting an existing PST is a good way to corrupt the mail profile.
Import/export is rarely necessary when moving PSTs between Outlook instances
and should be avoided.

Thanks. To make sure I got it right, when I'm ready to move locations I will
copy my pst file to a portable drive and then when I get to machine two I
will file/open/data file and point to the pst on the portable drive (or copy
the pst to the hard drive and point to that). I take it that copying the pst
file does not lose data or corrupt it?

Thanks again.

Hi Rioman,
please store your pst file onto a portable drive.
Copy the pst file back onto your hdd. REMOVE the write protection and point
to your pst file.
You doesnt lose data or currupt it.

As long as you copy it only while Outlook is not running, yes.

This step isn't required if the portable drive is a read/write medium like a
Zip drive or a thumb drive. It is necessary for optical drives, though.

OK, I've tried this, but it is really tedious. These are the steps -- copy
file, open new data file, then update each account setting to point to the
new pst file, then close outlook, then open outlook, then realize that your
rules no longer work because you have new files, then realize that even
though you told outlook to send new email to the new folders, it sends them
to the old folders still, then hit your desk in frustration... Am I doing
something wrong?

Yes, you'll have problems with rules, because a rule also contains
information on the machine where it was created so expecting rules to work
when transporting a PST between machines is unrealistic. Something you can
try is to alwo export your rules in Rules Wizard and transport that file
with your PST, importing them into the other machine.
