Mike

I installed Messenger 6 and I am still left with version
4.7. Ive tried everything to uninstall version 4.7 and it
cant be done. Its always logging me off the one version
and starting up the other. Why cant the old version be
uninstalled? If there is a way some help would be greatly
apreciated. THANKS

I have exactly the same problem as described by Mike.
When I started the installation of Messenger 6 today, I
received a message advising me to close all programs that
use messenger, i.e. Outlook, Outlook Express, Internet
Explorer, and ???. However, none of these programs were
running as far as I could determine. If they were
running, the Task Manager did not show them
under 'Applications'. I am not familiar /comfortable
enough to go through the "Processes" list and 'End Task'
any items that might have fit the programs I was to shut
down. Thus I went ahead with the installation. Result: As
mentioned earlier, I too, do now have both versions, and
can't find any way to uninstall version 4.7. HELP! Please,

Sybille

I have the same problem. Installed v.6 and can't get rid
of v.4. I've since uninstalled v.6 until I can resolve
the problem.

What bugs me most is that Microsoft notified me that I
needed to upgrade because of a security problem with v.4,
but I'm stuck with it on my computer. When I e-mailed
Microsoft customer service they told me it was an issue
that would have to be solved by a technician, probably at
a cost to me.

Please help!

Thanks,
Adam

Try type this in the command window

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%
\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

or you can set windows messenger(4.7) off by
selecting Tool->Option, tick off first box at
the 3rd tab

Hope this helps :)

I think that what you have is: Windows messenger ver.4.7 (and not MSN
messenger) that comes with XP and MSN messenger ver.6 that you downloaded.
They are different programs and there is no need to uninstall one of them.
Checking the right options in each of them you can have only one sign in
automatically.
The Microsoft security problem/update concern versions before WM4.7 and MM6
You should read the messages on the subject in the archives of this NG.

Certainly one would think that Microsoft has the smarts to build software
(Messenger) that sees that a previous version exists (Windows Messenger
4.7) so that when installing the newer version (MSN Messenger 6.0) that it
updates the previous version rather than installing itself along side the
older version. To me, this implementation of MSN Messenger by Microsoft is
completely without any forethough.

Microsoft should have either allowed the upgrade of 4.7 to 6.0 (ie.
replacment) , OR they should provide the ability to completely remove
version 4.7 in XP. Functionally, it does not make sense to have 2 programs
from the same software vendor that do basically the same things.

Would Microsoft allow the installation of IE5 and IE6 side-by-side, NO. So
why would they allow the same type of scenario with Messenger?

Hi Blariz,
You are right that there shouldn't be two similar messengers, people get
confused with a reason.
According to what I read, it seems that MM6 is for home users and WM4.7 is
for corporate users (or vice versa).
The programs are similar but they have some functions that are different.
Since I don't use those functions I am unable to give details.

Greetings Mike,

You can remove Windows Messenger 4.7, but if you do, you will be preventing Remote
Assistance, Whiteboard, Application Sharing and any other applications that utilize Messenger
from working (or loading without problems). You can just disable Windows Messenger 4.7, by
opening it up, click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and unchecking 'Run this program when
Windows starts'. This won't stop it from being loaded by some other application though. As
well, you can disable it further by going to Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs,
Add/Remove Windows Components on the left, uncheck Windows Messenger in the components list
and click Next >. Note: this is only available if you've installed Windows XP Service Pack
1 -- if you haven't, visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. This won't remove Windows
Messenger, but it will let it stay out of your way, and allow MSN Messenger 6 to work
properly.

Hey Jonathan!

Any idea of diagnosing what apps might be loading Windows Messenger?

I disabled it in Tools, then removed it from Add/Remove Pgms, but each time
I boot up I get a message that I've been signed out of MSN Messenger because
[Windows Messenger] has signed me in. I've disabled Messenger integration
in Outlook. Anywhere else to look?

Hi KF,

Long time no see =).

Well, Norton Antivirus 2003 [Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System
Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then
Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK] and supposedly AOL 9
starts up Windows Messenger for some reason (haven't tested this, just had reports). Other
then that, I can't think of anything else that might load at startup time that would load it.

You're busy as ever!

Those apps are not on my system. I renamed the Win Messenger directory and
my problem went away (obviously) - but so did Remote Assistance (I need
that - tech-challenged family!).

While the sub-dir was renamed, I reinstalled MessengerPlus and that had a
small impact but I had to rename the subdir back to make RA work. However,
where before I was logging into MSN Mess then logged out as Win Mess was
invoked, I now log into Win Mess and then am redirected to MSN Mess. In the
end that's what I want but the solution in inelegant; I'd rather Win Mess
lay dormant.

Is there a way of tracing calls to Win Mess?
