I have a seven PC network with 4 Windows 98 computers one Windows XP Pro computer and two Windows XP Home Computers. There is a router in place providing high speed internet access and also acts as the DHCP server. The two Windows XP Home computers always obtain the same IP address. If I provide a Static address to one of the xp home pc's it does function but will drop connections frequently to the rest of the network. It will reconnect but needs to be forced. The Windows 98 computers are fine. Why are the Windows XP Home computers acting strange?

what kind router do you have? you may be able to assign static from the
router instead of windows TCP/ip settings.

You need to reserve any static IP addresses on the router so it doesn't give
them to any other pc on the network. Make sure you take note of the MAC
address for each statically assigned pc as you'll need that info when you
create the reservations.
Once you reserve the IP addresses, you can go back and set those particular
pcs to obtaining IP address automatically as the DHCP service on the router
will always assign the same address to the same MAC number if there's a
reservation for it.

This will help with my IP's but the particular XP home PC that has the static IP attached still has trouble on the network loosing connections. It is a Dlink DI 604 router.
