Duplicate folders for each user account?

I was having some difficulty yesterday upgrading my laptop to xp pro sp2
from the home edition. It wasn't recognizing the key as valid (which it
was). Ultimately I did get it to succeed but there were aborted setup
attempts. All looks good now except that I now have 2 sets of folders for
each user with names like:

1) username and then 2) username.computername

The system is using 2) actively it seems although I'd prefer the other. The
login screen and user accounts in the control panel only shows username.
What is the best way to straighten this out?

Thanks.

Copy all the data from username to username.computername which you
still need. From the Safe Mode you can then delete the username
profile folder.
Create a new user and then logon and logoff from this user. Now copy
the data from username.computername to the new user and later delete
the username.computername user.
