duplicate file finders

I have two questions, and I hope neither is off topic.

I have downloaded PC Magazine "dupless" program.
It does a good job of finding and listing duplicates. The trouble is that I
can't find a batch command. I am allowed to right click to give me various
options for deleting a specific set of duplicates. That would be find if my
disks didn't have seven or eight gigs of dupes. Is there a command to delete
all dupes except one or the last or the first of the group? Am I talking
gibberish?

Secondly, I have deleted and or lost a free dupe utility which is very
powerful and thus very dangerous.
The way it works is that you open windows explorer and choose the folders or
disks you want to work on. the you run the program. After the dupe search
is complete you drag the dupes from explorer to recycle bin. The program
will automatically choose for you the dupe you want to keep. Can anybody
tell me the name of that file or a link to it?

Perhaps this:

DupeLocater can search thousands of files in a matter of seconds.

It does NOT care about file names or dates, only the contents of the files.
Files are considered duplicates If, and ONLY if, their entire contents are
identical. Bit for bit.
Duplicate files are exactly the same size, and contain exactly the same data.

EasyCleaner does a wonderful job checking for duplicate files.

It will show the path, size, type, modified date and time, attributes,
file version, product version, and CRC of each set of duplicates it
finds, and it groups them together. You can view or open each one to
verify that they truly are duplicates before selecting which ones to
delete. And it can do a whole lot more than check for duplicates. I've
used this program for a very long time and trust it with my files.

Have you used it ? IIRC this program is the worse duplicate
checker I have ever had the misfortune to try and use. I tried
to find duplicates on my system and it took forever. I seem to
remember I trashed it not long afterwards.

Yes, I've used it many times, use it still to this day, and plan on
continuing to use it! This is one of my favorite programs. :)

It's slow the first time, but only because of the sheer number of
duplicates on your system. I found the first run rather overwhelming,
because I knew I couldn't just delete them all, since some duplicates
are necessary on a computer. This meant that I'd have to check out any
I wasn't sure of, and there were a lot of those.

So I made a plan. I decided to run it from time to time, and remove a
few duplicates each time, but stop when I'd had enough, knowing I'd
get back to it again later. I did get back to it later, many times,
and each time that list got shorter. Another nice feature of the
program is that it groups the duplicates together by where it finds
them, so if you're in the mood to do a specific kind of file, that's
rather easy to do from the results list.

Then one day I targeted specific directories I knew were my "worst
offenders" (text and graphics for me). The lists for my worst
offenders was much shorter, making it seem less daunting. I got those
cleaned up in no time, and it felt good to be able to see the
difference in the directories themselves.

I continued running it on the entire computer from time to time (never
planning to accomplish the whole job at one time), and finally
finished the job - although, as you know, that job is never truly
finished. I still run it regularly to make sure I haven't added any
new duplicates to my system. My computer is far from duplicate-free,
but the duplicates on it are necessary. And if I don't wish to display
those, there's a spot to list exclusions (folders and/or files) in the
duplicate files window.

You might want to give this one another shot. :)

One of my pet hates is those programmers who reuse files by storing a
copy in another directory or using a slightly different name. Icons
are often the worst offenders.

I agree with you! I've used it for years without ANY problems whatsoever!

I've never had it do that in all the years I've been using it. You can set the
controls to delete to ReCycle Bin ...OR to PERMANENTLY delete whatever it finds.
AFAIC, if EasyCleaner finds it, I dump it....permanently! No problems yet.
Initially I did delete to the ReCycle Bin, but after learning what the program does
and how reliable it is (written by one specifically for this purpose...cleaning
registry)
I continue to use it and haven't looked back or for another.

I know just what you mean. That's what's left on my list of duplicates
now, and Windows itself is guilty of it. I suppose, though, that with
the billions of files out there, it's inevitable that some of them
would be similar or identical. :)

I agree here, and that's what I like about the exclusion list. Once
you know there are duplicates you won't need to check again (because
you've verified that they're necessary), just put them in an exclude
list to use when looking for duplicates, and you won't have to deal
with them at all. :)
