Duplicate emails in Outlook 2000

I have multiple email accounts set up in Outlook 2000 on my W2K box. One
of the accounts is set up to "Leave a copy of messages on server". This
basic setup in Outlook hasn't changed for 3 years.

This particular account receives a lot of email, as much as 10,000 per
month. At the end of the month, the email file on the server (sendmail,
Linux) is backed up, and a new file is started.

Here's the problem:

Recently (last couple of weeks) Outlook has not been keeping track of
messages that have already been received. Every couple of days, it will
receive the entire file from the server, starting from the first
message. It will work correctly for the a day or two, then do it again.

What's changed recently? Well, I've installed all the updates from
Windows Update and Office Update (Office 2000 Standard). I suspect one
of the updates is the culprit, but I'm not sure.

The mail server has not changed for months. I installed it and I
maintain it, so I'm sure about that.

Anyone having a similar problem? Any known cure?

I recall having this problem in the past, maybe a year or 2 ago. It went
away at some point, and has now returned.

Well, it looks like I'm the only person on the planet having this
problem!

Anyway, I decided to try deleting the account, and adding it again. That
seems to have stopped the behavior, at least for the last couple of
days.

no, you're not the only one with this problem. At least three other
people have all asked questions about "receiving duplicate emails" here
in the last week and NOBODY has the answer. I suspect Uncle Bill's
minions are ducking the question while trying to figure it out. WTFO
