duplicate emails in inbox

why do i see each new email message twice in outlook?
i'm using a hotmail acct
my colleague uses an imap server acct
i haven't checked with pop3 servers
i do know, however, this happened in outlook express too !!
what a crock!! this ms office stuff is way too expensive for this kind of neglect of annoying side effects.
fix it already microsoft!!
you've already got our money tho - so i guess we should ask nice.
anybody else have this duplicating email problem or is it just 'accepted' as a 'flaw'?
 
I am not an MVP, but a regular outlook user.

You may have your rules configured incorrectly. I have this problem if a piece of mail meets more than one criteria in my rules. For instance, if I make a rule for everything from so-and-so to go to a specific folder and notify me and then another rule that says if there is a "bad" word in it, then if my friend says a "bad word" in her mail, it could go to her folder and the junk folder. both folders would notify me because I have them instructed to do so.

Since I am such a freak about unwanted mail, this caused me no end of troubles, till i realized it was my rule writing that caused it.

I found the duplicates when I realized I took an entire address list into a rule (sent by someone) and applied more than one rule to the full list. I solved it by removing names from multiple rules.
