I have a PC that is running XP and Outlook 2000. The user
is complaining about the duplicate emails that they are
getting. What I am finding is that ocassionally there are
multiple envelope icons in the notification area on the
taskbar. However, outlook only appears once on the task
bar. So Im figuring that Outlook is running multiple
times and thats why it is receiving the emails multiple
times. My question is how can I prevent this from
happening ?

I you move the mouse over one envelope it will disappear. This means Outlook
has crashed or the task has been killed. Outlook can't even run multiple
times.

What is the account configuration? POP3, Exchange, IMAP, etc?

The config is POP3. This user has both a laptop and a
desktop. The phenomenon only occurs on the desktop. No
other clients are experiencing this. I think something is
going on with the desktop computer. Im not sure how to
troubleshoot this. You're right about not being able to
run it more than once. Ive tried that and it wont let
me. If I close Outlook, then one of the notification
icons will disappear. Then I click on the remaining one
and it pops up and error (forgot the exact wording).
Something about cant 'link'. There arent any rules
running. This is a pretty simple setup. It seems that
something is creating an instance of Outlook, but not
shutting it down.

That is very well possible. Software that integrates with Outlook (like
PDA/phone synch software, virusscanner, WinFax, etc...) are programs that
could Outllok not to close. You can disable the integration and see what
happens. Also recreating the profile (Control Panel-> Mail-> button Show
Profiles) could help you here.

I had/have this problem as well. I read a KB paper on the MS site that said
something about using a rule to move an email to a sub-folder causes this.
It shows up in Task Manager as OUTLOOK.EXE, I just end task and wave the
curser over the icon and *poof*. Kind of humbug, but no harm.
