I backed up "My Documents" to CD and named the backup "Jims My Documents".
Now there is a folder of that name under my C drive that is a mirror image of
everything in "My Documents" and seems to be synched with it. I shredded
"Jims My Documents" using McAfee and it also deleted everything in the "My
Documents" folder. I restored the backup to "My Documents" and "Jims My
Documents" reappeared. Does XP always keep a mirror image of "My
Documents"???

That's what I've been told.

The "Jims Documents" folder appearing under My Computer is bascially a
shortcut to the My Documents folder for your account. It isn't a separate
copy.

Open Explorer, locate the "Jims Documents" "folder", right-click on it, and
choose Properties. Check the location; it will almost certainly be
"c:\documents and settings\jim", exactly the same as your My Documents
folder.

Identify or create a specific document that you only see in these two
"folders". Do a system-wide search for documents with that name. You'll
probably find that there is, in fact, only one physical copy of the
document.

This is why, when you deleted the contents of that "folder", your My
Documents folder was cleared, and why they seem synched. They are just two
views of one thing.
